Three steps

How does MP3 to Text work?

Step 1: Upload or drop the file

Drag your .mp3 (.mpga and .mpeg read the same) into Speech to Text. Uploads up to 25 MB per file.

Step 2: A Whisper-class model transcribes

The audio goes to a Whisper-class model and the transcript comes back in the same view, usually within seconds.

Step 3: Copy, download, or save

Copy the text, download it as .txt, or save it to your library next to the source audio.

The format

What is an MP3 file?

MP3 is the audio format that won. Standardized in the early 1990s and patent-free since 2017, it shrinks sound by discarding what human ears are least likely to miss, which is how an hour of talk fits comfortably in a pocket-sized file. Nearly every device made this century plays it without asking questions.

That ubiquity is exactly why MP3 is the file people most often need transcribed: decades of interviews, lectures, and episodes live in it. The lossy compression does not trouble a Whisper-class model either; spoken words survive MP3 encoding so well that a clean MP3 transcribes about as accurately as the uncompressed original.

Where MP3 recordings come from

  • Podcast feedsalmost every published episode arrives as MP3, so a saved show is ready to transcribe as it sits.
  • Handheld dictation recordersthe small recorders journalists and doctors carry default to MP3 at voice-friendly bitrates.
  • Old archivesinterviews, talks, and radio rips collected over twenty years of downloading are overwhelmingly this format.
  • Export buttonswhen an editing or conversion app offers to save audio, MP3 is usually the option it preselects.
The honest specifics
  • Uploads up to 25 MB per file
  • Reads .mp3, plus .mpga and .mpeg read as the same format
  • Output: plain text, as a copyable transcript or a .txt download
  • No watermark, yours to keep
Straight answers

MP3 to Text questions, answered honestly.

Can I convert MP3 to text free?
Yes. Speech to Text runs on the free allowance: sign in, upload an MP3 up to 25 MB, and the transcript is yours to copy or download as .txt. No watermark on the text and no trial meter counting down.
How accurate is MP3 to text transcription?
For a clear voice recording at 64 kbps or better, accuracy is effectively the same as transcribing lossless audio. What actually hurts a transcript is the room, not the format: crosstalk, distance from the microphone, and loud music beds cost more words than MP3 compression ever will.
How long an MP3 can I transcribe at once?
The cap is size, not minutes: 25 MB per file. At a speech-typical 64 kbps that is roughly 50 minutes of audio, and around 25 minutes at 128 kbps; both figures are approximate. For a longer episode, split the file or export it at a lower bitrate first.
Do .mpga and .mpeg audio files work too?
Yes. Both extensions are read as MP3 here, because that is what they are underneath. Rename nothing; upload the file as you found it.
