The format

What is a WebM file?

WebM is the web's own recording format. When a browser records through the MediaRecorder API, the machinery behind nearly every record button on a web page, the file it hands back is .webm, usually with Opus audio inside. It exists so the open web would have a royalty-free media format that no one could meter.

If a browser-based tool gave you a file you do not recognize, odds are this is it: web dictation pads, in-page interview recorders, tab-capture tools, and this studio's own recorder all produce WebM. There is nothing to convert; the same upload box that takes an MP3 reads a WebM directly.

What is a .webm file and why do I have one?
It is the file browsers create when they record. You pressed a record button on a web page at some point, and the download that followed was WebM. It is a normal, well-supported format, just one that desktop media players adopted late.
Can I transcribe the audio from a browser screen recording?
Yes. Upload the .webm and the speech inside it comes back as text. If your particular recording refuses to upload, export its audio track alone from any editor and that file will go through.
Is WebM audio quality good enough for transcription?
Comfortably. Browsers record Opus at bitrates that flatter the human voice, so a quiet room and a decent microphone matter far more than the container. Dictation captured this way transcribes as well as a phone memo.
Why does my recorder produce WebM instead of MP3?
Licensing and history: when in-browser recording was specified, MP3 still carried patents, so the web standardized on free formats. The browser writes what it can write without owing anyone, and that is WebM.
